About Shannon City
Shannon Airport is located in the Shannon region of Ireland. County Clare is an area steeped in history and culture, it's the birthplace of traditional Irish music and home to the Cliffs of Moher, which is Ireland's number one tourist attraction. These cliffs are 214m high and overlook 8km of the Atlantic ocean, they are Ireland's entry for the next “Wonders of the World”. They are home to one of the major colonies of sea birds in Ireland and now have a state of the art visitor centre – The Atlantic Edge which will educate and entertain everyone. This part of Ireland is also famous for it's fishing and there is plenty here for any angler. There is sea angling from one of the small ports along the coast, or salmon fishing in the lakes and rivers, if you've always fancied fishing but don't know here to start, you can even have lessons!
If it is culture you are after in the Shannon area, visit Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, the folk park has some fantastic reproductions of local cottages and street scenes from Victorian Ireland, whilst the castle, which was restored to it's former glory in 1954 hosts medieval banquets twice weekly which are something definitely not to be missed.
For those visitors who are looking for some relaxation as well as finding out more about the local area, why not try
Burren Retreat Holidays, where you will be taken on daily outings accompanied by a guide to the Burren hills and also the sea. Part of the package includes visits to the best eateries in the area where you can try out some of the local food and dishes. Each day starts with meditation and yoga classes, it doesn't matter if you haven't done that before as all levels are catered for even if you are a complete novice.
There is also the Bunratty Cookery School nearby where you can learn cookery skills from the owner and professional chef Donnagh Gregson. For somewhere to stay in the area, there are several luxury hotels including some in castles and manor houses and the area also has plenty of self catering cottages available too, so you can take advantage of the excellent local produce.
