About Knock City
Knock is situated between the towns of Sligo and Galway in the west of Ireland. As it is such a small village there are only a few guest houses offering bed and breakfast in the immediate vicinity, however, in Westport just 35 miles away to the west you will find several 4 star hotels offering a more luxurious stay. Alternatively, particularly for a family or group of friends there are numerous cottages to rent with varying facilities for every budget.
The main reason for people to visit Knock is the shrine to Our Lady which is one of Europe's major shrines along with Lourdes in south west France, however there is much more to the area. There are many museums and heritage centres dedicated to local culture throughout County Mayo such as Hennigan's Heritage Centre at Killasser near Swinford which as well as offering an interesting insight into local history, also has animals and a picnic area making it a good family day out.
Another good reason to visit County Mayo is to learn something new, there are two summer schools here, the O'Dalaigh School of Painting offers painting workshops set in an old stable studio on Achill Island, just over 60 miles from Knock on the Atlantic coast. Or why not visit Marjorie's Kitchen cookery school where Marjorie Morrow-Nolan, a famed cook and writer can pass on her skills.
